COCOA BEACH

Lynda and I went to the beach on Monday.  we haven't been here since our first visit to Florida with my son. He was 8, so it is over 30 years ago. I usually go to the gulf but I love the ocean.
We were well prepared to spend the day, Umbrella (too windy, almost flew away), chairs, lunch, books, towels and of course the cart to carry it all. Lynda  is not a ocean person so no bathing suit for her. I wore mine and went in several times.

Took a walk and saw sea gulls. Some pelicans flew over too.
Don't see this bird at the Jersey shore.
The weather was perfect, no traffic problems going or coming home, No problem parking and it was a nice beach. I will have to do this more often.

HOWEY MANSION

METS (Meeting, Eating, Traveling Seniors) group from our church sponsored a trip to Howey Mansion in Howey-in-the-Hills. It has just been open a little over a year after much renovation from years of disrepair and neglect.
The mansion is now open for tours and used for weddings and special events.
A large group went on the tour. Many of us drove since the church bus only holds 15.
We gathered in the ballroom.  The walls are made our of plaster or stucco, and the ceiling beams are cypress. The furniture is not the original and we were allowed to sit on it.

This is Mr Howey who built the house in 1925. His love was citrus and he made his money from buying land cheaply and planting trees. He sold an acre of trees at a very substantial profit.
The archway that looks like marble was really plaster, treated very secretly to look like marble.
The courtyard looking at the building that had been the garage but is now where the kitchen is for catering.

The statue is not a mermaid but a siren, as in Greek mythology. Starbucks symbol is also a siren, they have two tails.

The stairway upstairs. All the fixtures are the original.
Beautiful stain glass at the front door.

In the library when one of the shelves was removed there was a lever on the wall.
 The lever moved this pin.
That allowed this wall to open,
so you could go down these steps,
to where the liqueur was hidden.
All the bottles were empty, but there was a nice display of things to look at from this period.

A nice bright sitting room upstairs.
 With a patio outside,
that looked down at the courtyard.
There were four bedrooms and bathrooms.
The one bedroom had a ladder that lead up to the roof. What a view they had from there.
From the master bedroom you came out to this patio,
that had a staircase to the side of the house. Our guide was very knowledgeable and gave a very good tour.
After the tour we all went to JB Boondocks for lunch.

NEW TV

The color on our TV wasn't working very well when we watched DVDs so Larry ordered a new 65 inch curved TV.
Before it arrived we took out the book case and old TV and moved the fireplace.
Larry put on the TV stand.
We put the TV on the fireplace. The TV may have fit in the old book case, but a neighbor had already taken it. I sort of like it the way it is.

BOK TOWER

On Monday Lynda and I went to Bok Tower Gardens.

Part of our admission was a tour of Pinewood Estate. The winter residence of Charles Buck, the vice President of Bethlehem Steel, from 1932 to 1945.

Two other families owned the property before Bok Tower Gardens purchased the property in 1970.

Each room had a different tile floor pattern and the tiles on the wall were different. The door was bigger then the opening because of  the height of the wall.
All the doors were beautiful carved cypress wood.
This side of the room had a Mediterranean decor and the other half of the room had an English decor. These are pocket doors that led out to the frog fountain and the Italian gardens. The pocket door slide into the wall, enabling the screen door to provide cross-ventilation.

The Steinway piano, and it is signed by Steinway. The piano is on wheels because the house is occasional used for dinner parties and concerts.
The winding stairway went up to his bedroom.
All the bedrooms had their own bathrooms. The shower was in the middle of the tub.
One of the previous owners painted all of the doors white, so all the doors have had to be refinished.
Each step had a different tile design.
Lynda sitting in the Italian garden.
From the frog fountain looking back to the house with the room with the sliding glass door.
This is the back of the house with the English gardens. It is quite a unique home and we enjoyed the tours by the docents.
Lynda and I then strolled through the grounds and over to the Bok Tower to hear a carillon concert.
There are 60 bells in the tower and you can watch the live performance on a screen in an area in the gardens.
After the performance we met Alex Johnson.  He is in college at University of Rochester for physics. He played percussion instruments and fell in love with the carillon. He is here for 6 month program offered by the resident carillonneur. Alex will be playing the carillons this summer at Longwood and Valley Forge.
Beautiful gold doors on the tower tell the story of creation.
We enjoyed looking at all the beautiful and unique flowers.

Bok's grandmother saying that became his motto to live by. He definitely did it.
The weather was perfect and it was a beautiful day to enjoy this special place.
