HEADED NORTH

We left at 6 Thursday morning to go to Elysburg, PA to Farnsworth RV to have work done on our RV. Bob Tiffin had recommended this dealership to us when we met with him at Redbay. Our third air conditioner and heater weren't working so they troubled shot it for us and found the problem. It needed a new thermostat so the part was being sent up from Redbay to the Allegro rally in Massachusetts.
We were on the road again by 10. We went up 81 and across on 84. About 4 we stopped for the night at Fishkill, NY. From my Rest Areas and Welcome Centers book we knew there was a Wal Mart right off the exit. Unfortunately the Wal Mart was on the left hand side of a 4 lane highway and we were in the right lane so we drove for a few miles before we could get turned around. The Wal Mart /Sam club did not have a good area for us to park but we had seen a large parking lot with an RV the other direction when we got off 84. We went to it and it was a Home Depot plus some vacant buildings with large parking lots. We were told we could park there all night. It was a good place to stay.
Friday morning was rather foggy but we were on our way by 9. Our GPS told us to get off 84 in NY and take route 34, a narrow curvy 2 lane road (plus pouring rain) 34 goes through Darby where Yale is located. We traveled north on 95 to Mystic, Connecticut.We are staying at Old Mystic Seaport Campground for the next two days.

After lunch and a little rest we went exploring and stopped at Mystic Seaport. We were able to go in for the last hour and then spend all day tomorrow there for our admission.

We spent our hour at the Henry B. DuPont Preservation Shipyard.

Logs used for the lumber in restoring the Charles W. Morgan, the only surviving 1841 whale ship. This is the only functional ship building lumber yard left in the US.

Larry was impressed with how thick the walls were , 3 inches then 9 inches and than an inner wall.

They have restored all the top deck. it is covered with plastic to keep the wood moist.

This was a group of people who have been members for over 5 years and were getting a behind the scenes tour. We listened in while they were on deck and the guide was very informative about how important the whaling industry was and the perservation of this last remaining whaling ship.

We plan to spend tomorrow exploring more of Mystic Seaport.

LAND AND SEA

The river continued to rise and the lower camping site at Circle M are no longer in view.

The electric box is even now surrounded by water.

The electric pole is knocked over by old campers floating downstream, so we no longer have power.

Look closely and you can see part of an old camper in the tree.

This row of annual sites are too close to the water!

So we were told we were to leave Circle M for they would not have power for at least a week. We moved to our rental in Mountville where we have electrical hookup.

My son came and took me to my sisters on Thursday night,and then she and I went to Wildwood Crest, NJ on Saturday for the week. They didn't open Circle M until September 18th.

On the beach early Sunday morning there was a memorial for Sept. 11. One of the people killed in the Twin Towers was from Wildwood Crest and had been a life guard during his high school days.

Little flags lined the way from the life guard house to the water and an empty row boat was at the waters edge.

A large group of people spreading out along the beach for Hands Across Wildwood. Andrew had gone to Wildwood Catholic High school and a scholarship was given in his memory. They sold the shirts for $5 to raise money for it.

The row boat was put in the water and we all held hands at the waters edge as they rowed out to sea. They were hoping for 3,000 people and there was a very long line of us. We heard the life guards say when they came back in that it was a very impressive sight from the water.

A plane with a large American Flag flew over. It was a very inspiring event and a meaningful way to remember the 10th Anniversary of 9/11.

We had a beautiful week at the shore. We were on the beach every day and other then a little wind it was perfect. I have wanted to go to the beach in September since I retired and this was the first time it fit into our travels.

We spent a lot of time reading and talking.

Kathy and I went in the water everyday. It was in the 70's and perfect for body surfing.

This guy was kite surfing, boy did he fly. It was fun to watch.

Back at the house we played card games and sewed. My sister taught me how to knit a baby hat. The hats are donated to Ridley Hospital for the new born babies to wear home. So now I have a wintertime project.

HISTORIC FLOODING

All Wednesday evening we were pounded with one deluge of rain after another. The sound in an RV is rather deafening with these down pours. Thursday morning we walked around the campground to see the Conestoga river. This is the field by the sewer plant, the stream isn't usually seen from here.

We didn't have water this morning and this sink hole is the cause of the problem.

The waterline had been bent so they were working to fixi it.

It is amazing how swift the water is flowing. We saw lot of debris floating by. They are calling for these streams not to crest until tomorrow.

They are saying this flood could be higher then it was in 1972 from Hurricane Agnes. Our RV is on high ground so we are safe and we do have water again.
