We stayed at Big Oaks Campground in Delaware for the last two weeks in May. Dorothy and Brian, Larry's son live 8 miles from here.
1/4 of a mile from the campground was the entrance to Cape Henlopen and the parking for the Junction and Breakwater trail.
We biked the trail (the red line) into West Rehoboth .
Another day we took the trail to the left and went into Lewes. Each way was about 9 miles round trip.
The trail follows the tracks of an early railroad that once helped to join northern and southern Delaware. There were nice informational signs in spots along the trail.
The bridge over a salt marsh, the rest of the trail was sand and gravel.
The first day we biked I didn't quite make it to town. I hadn't ridden my bike for at least a year. The next time we made it to West Rehoboth but not to the beach.
We did ride into Lewes. Our plan was to look at all their stores, but we forgot the bike lock.
We crossed over the canal we had been on in Brian's boat, and
the marina on the other side where we docked and then turned around. Tell more about the boat trip later.
We did make it to the beach in Lewes. We had lunch at the DQ across the street before biking back.
I wanted a couple hours at the beach, so one day we drove into Lewes. I enjoyed the beach while Larry rode his bike all around the campground at Cape Henlopen. It is where we use to camp with our pop-up 25 years ago.
It was a little cool but a nice day. Later that afternoon it rained.
The Lewes Ferry is only a few miles down the beach. I would take it to Cape May to visit with my sister.
Dorothy and Brian live in West Bay Waterfront community. No, they don't live on a boat but hey have a lovely mobile home that they have fixed up so nicely. ( sorry I forgot to take a picture). They do have a pontoon boat at their marina.
We took a short trip out in the boat with them.
It was a beautiful day, We were headed to that strip of land.
Brian put out three crab traps. Unfortunately when he went back to check them a few days later someone had stolen them, even though the buoys were marked with his name and address.
Cleaning up the boat after we docked.
On Saturday, May 25 we went for an afternoon ride through the canals.
We went slowly most of the trip for boats can not make a wake. It was a very relaxing day.
We saw large beautiful waterfront homes.
This is Irish Eyes Pub and Restaurant in Lewes. We met Dorothy and Brian here for dinner the night before we left to come back to Florida.
This is the Lewes Harbor Marina I had the picture of from our bike ride.
When we biked to West Rehoboth we passed this
and biked over this bridge. Now we were going under it on a boat.
Memorial Day weekend our grandson, Brady and his family came to visit his mom and dad. their daughter, Ksenia (2 and 1/2) liked playing in the pool.
Mom and grandmom had their feet in the water.
We all went out for dinner Sunday night at JP Shuckers.
This restaurant is close to Brian's and sort of a local hangout. We enjoyed several good meals here during the two weeks.
Friday morning Larry took me to Lewes to take the ferry to Cape May.
I arrived in Cape May after a 85 minute ferry ride.
My sister drove down from Sharon Hill and met me at the ferry and then we went over to Wildwood.
I had made reservations for us to stay at this hotel Friday night.
The boardwalk was a few blocks away. We walked on the boardwalk for awhile and
then rode the tram car up to North Wildwood and back to the Crest.
We then walked on the beach back to our motel.
The beach in the Crest is very wide. Lynda never made it to the ocean.
June 1 was Lynda's 78th birthday. I was so glad I could celebrate it with her.
After a late breakfast, we went to the point in Cape May. This is all that is left of the Concrete Ship. You can see the ferry.
We had a late lunch at the Lobster House in Cape May. Lynda loves scallops.
I was to get the 6 o'clock ferry, the last one for the day. We came a little early for there was a big triathlon event happening and we were told to allow time for the traffic. I was able to take the 4:30 ferry, but it was delayed and didn't leave till 5:15. Lynda got stuck in some of the event traffic that was leaving and I got home a little earlier for Larry and me to say goodby to Dorothy and Brian.
We left on Sunday morning and went over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel to Virginia.
First tunnel. The whole span is 18 miles long. It cost us $28.
Second tunnel.
We stopped for the night at Carolina Crossroads RV Resort in Roanoke Rapids, NC. Our next stop was at Harmony Lake RV in Townsend, Georgia. We were back home Tuesday afternoon, June 4th. I really enjoyed our trip back to PA and Delaware in the spring.
